Gypsum board ceilings are tough, versatile & economical. It is a sterile sulphate of calcium, light weighted & easy to install. Gypsum ceiling tiles are fire-resistant, as well as soundproof; therefore it is most preferred material for false or drop ceiling!

Pros:

  • Gypsum board is quite flexible. It allows various shapes & design such as plain, stepped, curved, coffered, pelmet, drop design, etc.
  • Glass fibre-reinforced gypsum board makes excellent insulation material.
  • When exposed to fire, gypsum gives out water, which is converted to steam & helps to combat the fire. This is what makes the ceiling fireproof!

Cons:

  • It cannot be used in damp situations.
  • It cannot be moulded!
  • Finding a place to recycle it can be difficult, most end up in land-fill.
Suspended ceilings (sometimes referred to as dropped ceilings or false ceilings) are secondary ceilings suspended from the structural floor slab above, creating a void between the underside of the floor slab and the top of the suspended ceiling!

Pros:

  • Suspended ceilings are easily installed in a home or office.
  • A suspended ceiling can easily conceal imperfections and flaws on the actual ceiling.
  • By installing a suspended ceiling with fiber glass, you can block all of the sounds from outside.

Cons:

  • The biggest disadvantage of suspended ceilings is that they reduce the height of a room by several inches or feet.
  • Suspended ceilings do not last very long.
Drop-in Laying in a grid just below your ceiling, drop ceilings are easy to care for. Great for hiding duct work & wiring, they allow ready access to pipes. Drop ceilings are easy to repair and to replace tiles as needed. It also allows you to get a new surface without losing ceiling height!

  • It reduces the height of the room
  • Leakages will make them deteriorate, staining is impossible to remove.
Drop out ceilings allow the installation of a dropped ceiling beneath existing fire sprinklers because the tiles, sometimes called melt-out ceiling tiles, are heat sensitive and designed to fall from the dropped ceiling suspension grid in the event of a fire, allowing the sprinklers to do their job!

  • To address fire safety, ceiling tiles made from mineral fibres, plastic, tin, composite, or fire-rated wood panels can be used within the construction to meet acceptable standards/ratings.
  • Drop out ceilings have a further advantage in that they can be mounted underneath fire sprinklers, thus hiding the sprinklers for a more attractive appearance!

Cons:

  • Clearance is required between the grid and any pipes or ductwork above to install the ceiling tiles and light fixtures.
